Performance evaluation tool for strategic energy management

LKAB is an energy-intensive company. Energy efficiency is therefore a top priority and encompasses all aspects of the company’s operations. At the same time, the company plans to increase production of iron ore products. The aim is to reduce energy consumption per tonne of finished product.

“The energy issue is central. We are a quality leader in our business and we wish to remain at the forefront, even when it comes to strategic energy management. Therefore, we welcome all efforts that promote a holistic approach to energy use that fosters responsible production,” says Johan Sandberg, LKAB.

PRISMA is a knowledge centre within Swerim where industry and research institutes collaborate on process integration issues. Within the framework for PRISMA, Swerim has developed a performance evaluation tool for strategic energy management at LKAB. The tool can compile, summarize and evaluate a large volume of data on energy use over time. 

The effects of both planned and executed activities can be quickly assessed from an energy perspective, both in individual operations and at the corporate level. Even energy costs and CO2 emissions can be incorporated into the performance evaluations.

The tool helps us to ensure that our measures with respect to energy management are as effective as possible and contributes to achieving the company’s overall objectives,” says Johan Riesbeck from Swerim.
