Simulation of heat treatment

Predicting the result from, for example, hardening is an excellent way to help increase understanding of heat treatment processes. We offers help with everything from basic partial computations to complete simulations of the entire process.

Computation of heat treatment processes

Depending on the need we are able to solve a variety of problems in the area of heat treatment through the use of computation tools. We perform computations for different sorts of steel, methods and conditions. For example:

  • Hardenability computations for different types of steel
  • Predicttion of the impact of changes in the quenching procedure during operation
  • Calculation of heating and quenching speeds
  • Computations for hardening depth during induction hardening.

All of these are basically quite simple and very fast computations.

We are also able to simulate the complete hardening process, such as case hardening and induction hardening to predict deformations and residual stresses. These types of computations, however, require more effort in terms of pre-processing and the computation times can be longer.

Computation software

We work with a variety of software. To evaluate the result for the different types of quenching we use our own software SmartQuench Integra which can also be used for calculation of heat transfer coefficients and hardening result (hardness).

For simple and fast computations of heating and quenching during, for example, induction hardening we use the ELTA software. Sysweld is a finite element code used for coupled thermo-metallurgic mechanical computations in 2D and 3D. JMATPro is software used to calculate the material properties depending on the chemical composition of the steel. This is also an excellent tool for producing input data of material properties for other types of computations and simulations.
