Towards Sustainable Phosphorus – PHIGO
We are pleased to inform you that Swerim has newly been granted a new ERA-MIN3 project, “PHIGO”.
The project aims for development of sustainable technology for efficient extraction of Phosphorus (P) from secondary resources such as P-rich ashes from incineration of manure and sewage sludge, thereby one step forward to a closing loop of phosphorus in the EU P-strategy.
“Phosphorus is an essential element for all living organisms including human, animal, and plants, since it is a major constituent of cell structure and it plays a key role in most life processes and it underpins all food systems”; says Elsayed Mousa, the executive project manager. Due to its economic importance and supply risk, the EU included Phosphorus and Phosphate Rocks in the List of CRMs.
“PHIGO project is funded by ERA-MIN3, VINNOVA from Sweden and also several national financers from EU and Turkey and it is successful continuation for our DEASPHOR project funded by ERA-MIN2 programme”, says Dr. Guozhu YE, the project leader and the coordinator of PHIGO consortium.
The Consortium consists of distinguished experts from University of Ege (Turkey), University of Porto (Portugal), University of Politehnica of Bucharest (Romania), Central Mining Institute and PROGEO (Poland), and University of Brescia (Italy). The project will start on March 1, 2022 and continues for 3 years.
