Digital Metal Values is a collaborative project aiming for an efficient and profitable implementation of Digital Product Passports (DPP) within the Swedish metal industry. The project brings together industry, trade organizations, and research actors to develop and test solutions through pilot studies for steel, aluminum, and cast products. Its goal is to ensure fair and transparent information sharing, increase digital capabilities, and promote the manufacturing of sustainable products.
Digital Metal Values brings together 26 partners from across the metal value chain to jointly identify and understand the practical implications of implementing Digital Product Passports. The project aims to create a shared platform where participants can exchange experiences regardless of whether they work in IT, sales, procurement, sustainability, or regulatory compliance.
The project runs four pilot studies that map and develop simple and limited DPP concepts for selected product types within steel and aluminum. Through open seminars, lectures, and workshops, experiences and knowledge are shared on themes such as traceability, data requirements, LCA methods, standards, and regulatory interpretation. The results and insights from these activities and pilot studies are compiled into reports and recommendations shared with the industry.
What is Digital Product Passport?
Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a new EU regulation mandating that a every product must carry important digital information about its materials, sustainability, and environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle. The purpose is to increase transparency through standardized ways of sharing data and to make it easier to recycle, repair, and choose sustainably produced products. DPP is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force in 2024.
Steel and aluminum have highly energy‑intensive and resource‑demanding production processes and are key input materials for many different value chains. They are considered priority intermediate products and will be among the first to be covered by the DPP regulation.
Why is the project important?
The project is important for preparing Swedish industry for the EU’s requirements for more sustainable and transparent products. It strengthens the sector’s ability to manage digital information and meet increased traceability demands. At the same time, it helps highlight the competitive advantages of Swedish products.
