Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) – Project coordinator – is a public university renowned for its focus on applied sciences, fostering cultural development, scientific research, and technological innovation. Through its ICT for Complex Industrial Systems and Processes (ICT-COISP) center at the Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, and Photonics Institute (TeCIP), SSSA plays a pivotal role in the Symbio-Steel project. Since its inception, ICT-COISP has specialized in advanced modeling and simulation systems tailored to monitor, manage, optimize, and control steel production processes. Their work targets not only improving operational efficiency but also enhancing environmental sustainability through circular economy and industrial symbiosis solutions.
With over 75 EU-funded projects participated in since 2000—many within the RFCS and Horizon Europe frameworks—ICT-COISP brings unparalleled expertise, having coordinated 12 projects, including iSlag and REUSteel. They have also contributed to impactful initiatives like Slagfertiliser, PSP-BOF, and large-scale ERASMUS+ projects such as the European Steel Skills Agenda (ESSA). Currently it is involved in another large-scale ERASMUS+ project: Skills Alliance for Industrial Symbiosis: A Cross-sectoral Blueprint for a Sustainable Process Industry (SPIRE-SAIS).
In addition to the ICT-COISP team, the team of Prof. Anna Loretoni, full professor of Political Philosophy of the DirPolis Institute of SSSA, will be also involved. Prof. Anna Loretoni will be the Ethics Mentor (EM) for the project to help with ensuring activities comply with ethical and legal requirements for research with humans and personal data processing.
