The SymbioSteel project fostering Industrial Symbiosis solutions for the steel sector by results monitoring and dissemination from national and EU funded projects coupled to definition of cross-sectorial synergy scenarios.

The metals research institute Swerim, stands out as a global leader in transforming raw metals into final products. With expertise spanning process metallurgy, heating, metalworking, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), environmental engineering, and energy efficiency, Swerim serves both ferrous and non-ferrous sectors. Its state-of-the-art pilot plant facilities and robust research capabilities have earned it international acclaim. 

Swerim boasts extensive experience leading national, European (e.g., RFCS, Horizon), and international projects. 

For SymbioSteel, the Metallurgy department takes the helm. The department has led several nationally funded industrial symbiosis projects, for instance, OSMET project funded by Swedish Innovation Agence, which integrates the steel sector with the pulp & paper and mining industries; and a few EU Horizon projects, like INITIATE and FReSMe, upgrading gases from steel plants for diverse industrial applications.
