This project – TRANSFER – has received funding from the Research Fund for Coal & Steel (RFCS) under project No.101294629.
Start-end date: 1 September 2026 – 28 February 2030
Duration: 42 months
Funded under: Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) programme of the European Union
Overall budget: €2,523,285.85Euro
Reference number: 101294629
The project
TRANSFER offers a new approach for the development and validation of stainless steels for hydrogen service produced by additive manufacturing (AM). The project combines alloy design, advanced manufacturing routes and post-processing with hydrogen testing and component validation.
This innovative approach considers not only the material composition, but also the manufacturing process and resulting microstructure, to improve resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and mechanical degradation. Additive manufacturing technologies such as PBF‑LB and WAAM are used to tailor microstructures and enable near‑net‑shape production.
The developed materials and processes are validated through systematic testing and industrial demonstrators, linking laboratory-scale understanding to real operating conditions. TRANSFER will deliver a comprehensive dataset and validated methodologies to accelerate the use of AM stainless steels in hydrogen infrastructure, supporting the transition to a low‑carbon economy.
