About the HåBiMet Projects
HåBiMet is a research and collaboration initiative aimed at accelerating the transition to fossil-free metal production by exploring the use of sustainable biocarbon as an alternative to fossil coal. The projects bring together partners from industry, academia, and the energy and forestry sectors to address technical, social, and policy-related challenges across the entire value chain.
The projects investigate the technical feasibility of using biocarbon in key metallurgical processes, maps biomass availability, and identifies barriers and opportunities for scaling up production and use. Results show that biocarbon can meet many of the technical requirements in steel and ferroalloy production, although challenges such as material quality and market development remain.
With a strong systems perspective, HåBiMet also examines how different sectors interact and how policies, market conditions, and stakeholder collaboration influence the development of a sustainable biocarbon industry. The projects highlight the importance of cross-sector cooperation, continued research, and supportive policy frameworks to build a robust and scalable value chain.
Overall, HåBiMet contributes to Sweden’s climate goals and supports the development of a fossil-free, resource-efficient, and circular industry.
Funding
HåBiMet comprises four projects within Impact Innovation, Sweden´s major national investment in innovation to address today´s and tomorrow´s challenges. The projects are part of the program Swedish Metals & Minerals. One of the projects is shared with the Net Zero Industry program.
The funding comes from the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, and Vinnova. The HåBiMet projects are co-funded by Swerim´s Metallurgy Council.
