Road map/schematic diagram of the project topic.

This can be 3 focuses/key points that the project work with.

3 key points

  • Advanced symbiosis for the steel sector
To date, many possible symbiotic links between steel industries and other sectors have been explored, from the use of slags in cement production to use of oxidic byproducts in water management or electronics.

SymbioSteel aims to spread both the general lessons learned about implementing Industrial Symbiosis, as well as the knowledge of specific applications that might be adopted more widely in the steel sector.

  • Recycling and carbon reduction
SymbioSteel aligns closely with the goals of the European Green Deal, particularly in advancing recycling and carbon reduction through industrial symbiosis. By promoting the sustainable management of materials and resources, the project supports the transition to a circular economy, reducing dependence on virgin materials and critical resources while mitigating CO₂ emissions.

SymbioSteel aims to identify key drivers and barriers to accelerate the implementation of these strategies, benefiting companies, the environment, and society. Through effective dissemination and knowledge exchange, we strive to assist in the reduction of resource and energy consumption, minimizing environmental impacts and supporting Europe’s journey toward climate neutrality by 2050. Together, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

  • Enhancing cooperation between sectors
Enhancing cooperation between sectors is crucial for fostering industrial symbiosis, as it enables the efficient exchange of resources, reduces environmental impact, and promotes circular economy principles. SymbioSteel aims to strengthen these collaborations by identifying and disseminating best practices for integrating different aspect of steel industry (for instance, by-products) into other sectors, such as cement production, urban energy systems, and water management.
