EUROSLAG 2026
It’s our pleasure to participate in the EUROSLAG 2026 conference, June 15-18 in Lulea, Sweden.
We hosted a workshop of SymbioSteel project as a special session of the EUROSLAG 2026. Prof. Valentina Colla from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and Dr. Han Yu from Swerim AB chaired this session on Industrial Symbiosis with a strong participation from the audience and very interesting discussions.
Presentations from all the partners of SymbioSteel were provided: Prof. Valentina Colla and Dr. Teresa Annunziata Branca from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Dr. David Algermissen from FEhS - Building Materials Institute, Dr. Lina Kieush from K1-MET GmbH , Dr. Chuan Wang and Dr. Erland Nylund from Swerim AB, and Dr. Daphne Mirabile from RINA Consulting - Centro Sviluppo Materiali.
A booth of SymbioSteel project was presented in EUROSLAG 2026, where we had engaging interactions and valuable knowledge exchange and knowledge exchange with visitors and stakeholders.
We sincerely appreciate the fruitful discussions and insightful exchanges during our session, at the booth and throughout the entire EUROSLAG 2026.
Hubs4Circularity Final Conference
We attended the Hubs4Circularity Final Conference on May 27, 2026, in Brussels, joining ~150 experts to reflect on progress toward industrial Ecosystems and future collaboration.
While we had planned to present our poster about industrial symbiosis efforts in the steel industry at the networking session, unfortunately it didn’t make it to Brussels with us. Still, we were happy to connect with participants and share insights about SymbioSteel through project flyers and discussions.
A big thank you to the H4C organisers and contributors for a well-curated event and for fostering such an engaged community.
For those curious about the poster, it will be presented again at EURPSLAG again next week.
Participation in EMECR 2026
We are delighted to participate in EMECR 2026, on May 11-13, 2026, and showcase the work of SymbioSteel.
We would especially like to thank everyone who joined our special session: “Industrial Symbiosis for the steel sector: opportunities, challenges and success stories.” Your engagement and contributions made it a truly insightful discussion.
A big thank you as well to those who stopped by the SymbioSteel booth to connect with our project team. The conversations and shared perspectives are an important part of moving industrial symbiosis forward in the steel sector.
During the conference, we also had the opportunity to conduct additional interviews with experts and stakeholders—stay tuned as we’ll be sharing these insights soon.

ESTEP 2025
We were pleased to participate in the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) Annual Event 2025 in Udine, Italy.
The event focused on the development of decarbonization, digitization, industrial symbiosis, and circular solutions, and on how these areas shape a sustainable future for the European steel industry.
During the event, we gained valuable insights into these topics and engaged in meaningful discussions with industry peers. We also presented our SymbioSteel project in our conversations and distributed flyers highlighting the project’s focus areas, activities, and expected outcomes.
In addition, we conducted interviews with experts on industrial symbiosis. Stay tuned for the upcoming release of these interviews!
SymbioSteel Online Project Meeting
We were pleased to hold an online SymbioSteel project meeting with our partners via Teams on Oct 15th, 2025.
It was a productive and engaging session, during which we reviewed the progress and achievements from the first year, evaluated key results and challenges, and planned the activities for the second year of the project.
Together, we continue to advance Industrial Symbiosis solutions through our dissemination Project efforts.
SymbioSteel presented in “Circular Economy & Industrial Symbiosis” session at ESTAD 2025
We were delighted to participate in ESTAD2025, held in Verona, Italy.
Prof. Valentina Colla delivered the presentation “Recent achievements of Industrial Symbiosis in the steel sector based on the Symbio-Steel project”, in the session on Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis.
SymbioSteel is an EU RFCS project dedicated to advancing and disseminating research on industrial symbiosis within the steel industry.
We sincerely appreciate the fruitful discussions and valuable exchanges during this session and throughout the entire ESTAD 2025.

SymbioSteel presented at Resource and Recycling day 2025
We were pleased to participate in Resource and Recycling Day 2025, hosted by Swerim AB and Jernkontoret in September 2025.
During the event, Prof. Valentina Colla from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Dr. Han Yu from Swerim AB gave a presentation on the SymbioSteel project, sharing its objectives, ongoing progress, and latest results with an audience of over 140 participants.
The event offered an excellent platform for inspiring discussions and knowledge exchange within the resource efficiency and recycling community.

EUBCE 2025 (9-12/6) in Valencia, Spain
SymbioSteel participated in the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition. Erland Nylund, Swerim presented the poster “Steel and biomass symbioses”, highlighting research on technologies synergetically connecting steel and biomass sectors. He also gave an oral presentation on a related topic “Supply Potential of Biogenic Gases from Agriculture to De-Fossilise the Swedish Steel Industry”.
SymbioSteel poster and survey in ESTEP Spring Dissemination Event 2025
We are pleased to share that the SymbioSteel poster was presented at the ESTEP Spring Dissemination Event on June 5, 2025, in Krakow, Poland. As a key part of our research, the poster featured a survey on current activities and emerging trends in industrial symbiosis within the steel sector.

ESTEP Spring Dissemination event
Our EU RFCS project SymbioSteel will present a poster in ESTEP Spring Dissemination event on June 5, 2025, in Krakow, Poland. We will use the occasion to invite participants to a key part of our research project – a survey that will study current activities and emerging trends on industrial symbiosis involving the steel sector. Workshop on slag, circular economy and industrial symbiosis in the steel industry
The session on industrial symbiosis was held on March 6, 2025, at the workshop on the role of slags and other byproducts within circular economy in the steel industry organized in Duisburg by The European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) and FEhS - Building Materials Institute, where our RFCS project SymbioSteel was presented and discussed. It was a great event with many interesting presentations and discussions, which provided us with valuable support for our upcoming SymbioSteel project work. We are very pleased to have participated in this session and in the workshop.
SymbioSteel project meeting in Duisburg
We are very pleased to have held our SymbioSteel project meeting on March 4, 2025, in Duisburg, Germany. We had nice and constructive discussions on the progress in the project and the work to be carried out to support industrial symbiosis solution via our dissemination project. We appreciate FEhS - Building Materials Institute for hosting this event.
We believe our project work can contribute to the development of industrial symbiosis and support a sustainable future!

SymbioSteel kick-off meeting in Bilbao (Spain)
The SymbioSteel kick-off meeting was held in Bilbao, Spain, in October 2024, gathering partners from across Europe to advance industrial symbiosis in the steel sector. Aligned with the EU Green Deal, the project focuses on resource reuse and carbon reduction.

Euroslag 2024 – EUROPEAN SLAG CONFERENCE in Bilbao (Spain)
In EUROSLAG 2024 Conference held in Bilbao (in October 2024), our project leader Valentina Colla from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna presented the RFCS project SymbioSteel, focusing on resources reuse, carbon reduction, and minimizing resources dependency to improve sustainability of steel production and the implementation of industrial symbiosis solutions.
