Acciaierie d'Italia S.p.A is Italy's leading integrated steel mill boasting one of Europe's largest full-cycle plants in Taranto and many other plants in Italy. ADI specializes in producing flat carbon steel products, with a production capacity of over 6 Mtons per year of crude steel. Decades of experience in managing a production cycle supported by several blast furnaces have allowed a unique specialization in the management, treatment and re-use of steel by-products from the various processes. In the Taranto plant, a new generation R&D Center was founded in 2021 to support the transition of steel processes from the scientific and methodologic points of view.
The R&D centre is fully equipped with over 12 laboratories able to analyze all products, by-products and environmental matrices. ADI's long-term experience in steelmaking and the innovative instruments of the new R&D Center will provide a solid basis for ADI's activities within the Zincval project.
Role in project
- Sampling and complete characterization of different types of steel by-products from the integral cycle (from BF and BOF) and their classification according to zinc content.
- Detailed study on the correlation between chemical composition, grain size, and density of blast furnace sludge.
- Supply of selected material for hydro-cyclonic separation laboratory tests at RINA-CSM.
- Technical-economic analysis and feasibility study on the use of the selected technology.
- Development of a correlation model between the zinc content in the raw materials of the sintering plant and that in the sludge exiting the blast furnace, to optimize future processes.
