ZincVal

Project concept

ZincVal – valorisation of low zinc-containing residues

Outlined here are our strategies for enhancing residue management in steel production, focusing on innovative separation, treatment technologies, and sustainable recycling practices.

Project concept
  • Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of residues samples from steel production for selection of treatment method
  • Development of technologies, with relatively low starting TRL, for separation and treatment of low-zinc residues from steel plants.
    – Hydrocyclone pilot prototype will be designed using CFD modelling  and simulation, followed by construction and experimental testing with residues from BF and BOF
    – Internal recycling of EAF-dust and biochar briquettes
    – Development of pyrometallurgical treatment methods, e.g. design, operational parameters, feed material properties with Oxyfines technology, rotary heart furnaces and rotary kilns.
    – Zinc enriched fractions can be recovered at zinc smelters or further processed by hydrometallurgical treatment.
  • Design the most sustainable recycling routes for different residues regarding environmental impact, energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as cost-effectiveness.
