Tata Steel is one of the world’s most geographically diversified steel producers with operations in 26 countries. The IJmuiden site in the Netherlands is one of the largest steel producers in Europe, suppling high-grade steel products to demanding sectors all over the world. We employ about 9500 persons, has a crude steel production capacity of 7.5 million tonnes. In the Netherlands, R&D is an important part of the company, with more than 270 research and supporting staff covering research on processes, products and applications. Tata Steel has devoted constant efforts in the past 40 years in exploring an effective and sustainable solution to minimize the landfill. Within the project ZincVal, Tata Steel will contribute with materials supply, characterisation of the dust samples, quality assessment and valorisation of the secondary by-products.
Role in project
- Supply of the required by-products for testing at partner’s facilities.
- Development of hydrometallurgical routes for zinc recovery and valorisation from the secondary zinc-rich flue dust generated within the project (e.g. by CRM).
- Assessment of the secondary lead-rich flue dust for further processing or safe disposal.
- Process-model development together with Swerim for benchmarking of the selected recycling technologies.
