Production of Mill Scale Briquettes
Material efficiency is one of keys priority for SSAB Europe Oy. Recirculating residual materials back into the steelmaking process can significantly contribute not only to save natural resources for sustainable production, but it will also reduce waste and residues to landfill. In this context, SSAB Europe Oy has collaborated with Swerim in developing mill scale briquettes with durable mechanical and chemical characteristics for implementation in BOF steel production unit.
By boosting the internal recirculation of residuals, the company increases the resource efficiency, boost the circular economy and reduces the environmental impacts.
“It is really good that Swerim has been assisting us to develop the new briquettes. It is always reasonable to test new ideas first in laboratory scale and extend the studies up to full scale via pilot scale”, says Timo Paananen, Process Development Manager at SSAB EUROPE. “We have gained the knowledge about the properties of the developed briquettes, and we had a better understanding of using them in the BOF process. For us, this work is very important step towards the future industrial implementation”.
