System analysis for improving energy efficiency

An international network of experts on process integration in the steel industry, organised through the initiative of Swerim, has worked to develop guidelines and advice on making complex industrial production systems more efficient.

Swerim took the initiative to form an international network of experts on process integration and its application for the steel industry. The project ran for four years with the support of the International Energy Agency. One aim was to develop guidelines and advice about making complex production systems more energy efficient.

The cooperation was in progress between 2011-2014. In the beginning, seven countries were participating, but a few more countries joined during 2011.

The goal was to contribute to improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions during iron and steel production by:

  • organising an international network of experts with experience using process integration in industrial applications.
  • assembling a global state of the art for research and development in this area.
  • compiling guidelines and tips for the application of process integration to make complex production systems more energy efficient.
