Håkan Sundström, Swerim

Håkan Sundström New Manager at Pilot and Demo in Luleå

For the past month, the Pilot and Demo group at Swerim has had a new manager. Håkan Sundström left Skellefteå and Northvolt – and moved to Luleå, right in the middle of a wave of gold fever.

“As a hockey enthusiast, it felt great to move here and start the new job just as Luleå Hockey won the Swedish Championship. We even caught the much-talked-about flu that's been nicknamed ‘Gold Fever,’” laughs Håkan, who has a very positive impression of his first weeks at Swerim.

“It’s a positive and wonderful team I’m working with. Everyone is inclusive and friendly, and they really care about their work and making sure everything runs smoothly.”

There’s no doubt about his goal:

“Wherever I work, I always aim to build a strong team and create the feeling that we’re the best department – both in terms of job satisfaction and performance.”

Håkan Sundström began his career as an operator at ABB in Piteå.

“I worked 16 years as an operator before my boss suggested I should become a supervisor. At first, I didn’t understand what he meant, but then I realized I had been a sports coach for many years and also a commander during my military service. And that I actually enjoy leadership roles!”

Most recently, Håkan came from Northvolt, where he held a position as maintenance manager.

Intense Years at Northvolt

“I was actually skeptical that the company would even get off the ground – even as late as when I was in Västerås for the job interview. But six months after that interview, right in the middle of the pandemic, I got the job. And during just over four years at Northvolt, I probably learned more than I had throughout my entire professional life,” says Håkan, summarizing a period he describes as a career in tempo 2.0.

“The company grew so fast, with so many quick decisions, and just bringing together a team of people from so many different countries. It was intense but, in its own way, magical. A special and positive work culture emerged. But of course, the collapse hit hard. I was never worried for myself, but for those who hadn’t learned Swedish, it’s been tough to find new jobs. At first, I spent most of my time trying to support others in my workgroup.”

As for himself, Håkan allowed himself to be selective – and ultimately landed at Swerim in Luleå, bringing with him the experience he’s gained along the way.

“I’ve actually even turned down job offers, but Pilot and Demo at Swerim felt like a positive challenge, and Luleå seemed like a great city to move to. When it comes to leadership, I often think back to my 16 years as an operator. What kind of manager did I want back then? That’s the standard I try to live up to.
