Vätgas och cirkularitet i Västerbottens Län (HOME)

Hydrogen and circularity in Västerbotten County

The project Hydrogen and circularity in Västerbotten County (Home) focuses on strengthening the green transition in Västerbotten's metal industry through innovation in hydrogen use, increased circularity, and bio-based materials. The work is divided into three parts with different focus areas, and several regional actors are involved in the collaboration.

The project is divided into 3 work packages::

  • Investigate prerequisites and future potential for hydrogen in regional steel and metal industry and other stakeholders in the value chain. Coordinated by IVL
  • Circularity in the Västerbotten metal industry. Coordinated by LTU. The goal is to improve the circularity and reduce the amounts of waste from regional mining and metal industry by converting them into resources, i.e. using them to produce cement/concrete to be used in mining environments. Concrete products will be developed using a combination of inert waste and waste rock. Swerim’s task in this work package is to test and verify the properties of the developed cement types when used for rock reinforcement installation.
  • Bio-based alloying agent for the Västerbotten foundry industry. Coordinated and executed by Swerim in collaboration with Envigas, Kåge Gjutmek, and Norrlandsgjuteriet. Today, foundries use fossil graphite with very high carbon content as an alloying agent. This work package investigates the effects of using locally produced biochar as a renewable carbon source instead. The work package is led by Swerim, while Norrlandsgjuteriet, Kåge gjutmek and Envigas contribute with knowledge and materials to the trials.

Project participants

The project involves, in addition to Swerim, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (coordinator), Luleå University of Technology, the County Administrative Board of Västerbotten, Region Västerbotten, Boliden Mineral, EnviGas, Kåge Gjutmek, and Norrlandsgjuteriet.
