SymbioSteel Webinar Highlights the Power of Cross‑Sector Cooperation
Industrial symbiosis in steelmaking is no longer a vision – it’s a growing collaboration.
On 15 October 2026, more than 70 participants from research and industry joined the SymbioSteel webinar to explore how shared resources, circular flows and innovative partnerships can accelerate sustainability in steel production.
Wide perspectives, active dialogue
The two‑hour online event offered a broad mix of topics and speakers from both academia and industry. Presentations covered everything from biochar applications for sustainable electric arc furnaces to science‑based target‑setting, skill development for symbiotic industries, and circular metallurgy.
Reflections from project leaders:
"We had a diverse set of presentations and many questions in the chat. The discussion showed how much potential there is when different sectors connect – and how important it is to keep building these platforms for collaboration."
Next steps – from project to continued collaboration
As SymbioSteel now approaches its conclusion, the message is clear: collaboration remains essential to advancing industrial symbiosis. The project has served as a dissemination initiative – collecting and sharing existing research, highlighting successful examples, and creating opportunities for dialogue and new connections between sectors.
Looking ahead, and based on the discussions during the webinar, the focus should shift from technology to collaboration structures – how we organize, maintain and further develop meeting points where industries can exchange knowledge and identify new symbioses. The experiences from SymbioSteel show that lasting progress depends on fostering these arenas and partnerships, ensuring that the networks and insights built through the project continue to inspire future cooperation towards a more circular and sustainable steel value chain.
